History

Slow rise

Initially, there was a section at the Hockey club Malmö FF. The club chairman in the 1970s, Erik Persson, regarded this section as to financially costly and so the section on 28 February 1972, spun off and the club Malmo IF founded. By 1983, the team played in the second division. Then it was off and on in the third division and in 1988 they had after a successful phase even the ability to ascend to the highest league (Elitserien). The qualifiers were to be lost.

The in 1984, elected spokesman of the association Percy Nilsson was now his nickname " master builder " ( byggmästare ) meet and picked up some world-class players in the club. After the 1989/90 season three qualifiers were at the highest league against the club MoDo Hockey, all of which were won.

Highest league

In the first year in the Elitserien Malmo IF could reach the play -off round, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals one against Luleå HF. In the 1991/92 season the club made the way to the finals. It was played in the best of five mode, and after two gained and lost two games against Djurgårdens IF the decider was held in Malmö. Before a record crowd of 5,940 spectators they won this game and was thus for the first time Swedish champion. The winning streak continued in the European Cup, so that Malmo IF it was clear after the final match against HK Dynamo Moscow as a winner of this contest.

The following year, it managed to Malmo IF in the Elitserien only to the semifinals, but a year later you could celebrate the next championship title after the final MoDo Hockey, which was in the lead already with two win games could beat by three successive victories.

In the 1994/95 season, the club was able to reinforce with several NHL stars, because there was held a players strike. This time, however, the team loses the finals after promising a full launch, which also leads to the separation of the current coach. There followed a period in which, although the association was able to reach the final round, but there in the quarterfinals or semifinals at a stronger opponent failed. In the 1997/98 season it was enough after several disagreements in the team not even in the play-off round. A year later, the team showed fighting spirit and played in front of the semi-finals. There was MoDo Hockey of the opponents once again. In the end it was only enough for a win, and the dream of finals had burst.

In the following two years, it failed in the semifinals and 2002 was already after the first play-off games end. After a mediocre season 2002/ 03 one years economic difficulties come later. The club management had closed with a television ( TV4 plus) a contract that the team should take part in a documentary series. This series did not materialize due to financial reasons, which also affected the association. The sporting achievements abated, so that they were forced to qualifying matches for remaining in the Elitserien. This time, the team was able to save even more, but after the 2004/ 05 season the club got off at a similar constellation and less successful qualifiers.

Descent into the Allsvenskan

The games in the Allsvenskan hockey of the season 2005/ 06 went largely successful, and so there was a chance for immediate resurgence, which was also used. But a year later failed Malmö on relegation in the Kvalserien, so the Redhawks descended again in the Allsvenskan. At the end of the season 2007 /08 they reached although the Kvalserien to move up, but failed on Rögle BK and Brynäs IF. Therefore, Malmö is also a member in the 2008 /09 second division.
