Mampong Municipal District

The Sekyere West District, today Mampong Municipal District, is one of more than 138 districts in Ghana. It is located in the center of the country in the Ashanti region and there one of 21 regional districts. The Sekyere West District is bordered by the districts Ejura / Sekyedumase, Sekyere East, Afigya Sekyere and to the districts Sene and Atebubu - Amantin in the Brong- Ahafo Region. Chief executive over the 2345 km ² large district with about 143 206 (2000) inhabitants, is Haruna Opong - Boateng, based in the district capital of Mampong.

Geography

In the district of the Mampong mountain range is located up to 615 meters above the sea level rises. The rivers Afram, Sene, Sasebonso and Chirimfa drain the district.

With its size of 2345 km ² district covers 9.6 percent of the entire Ashanti region.

Population

The population of Sekyere West is made up 92.6 percent of the Akan peoples. 0.4 percent belong to the people of the Ewe, also peoples from the north of Ghana are represented by 6.8 percent, other 0.2 percent are from other ethnic groups. 63.7 percent of the approximately 143 206 inhabitants live in small villages. 36.3 percent of the population live in urban centers such as Mampong, Kofiase, Nsuta, Kwamang, Beposo and Atonsu. The Sekyere West District is divided into 14 municipalities ( Area Councils ). These communities are Mampong, Nsuta, Beposo, Kwamang, Atonsu, Kofiase, Kyebi, Yonsu, Afigyasombi / Mprim, Adidwan, Asuo-Dida/Amoamang, Benim, Nkwanta and Sekyere West Plains.

Of the total population in 2000 were 71 378 men and 71 828 women, so the district slightly more women than men live. With a population growth rate of 1.4 percent per year Sekyere West is well below the national average of 2.7 percent and the regional average in the Ashanti region of 3.4 percent.

From the population accounts for 35.5 percent of the age group between 0 and 15 In 2000, 59.3 percent of the population of working age between 15 and 64 years. This corresponds to 84 925 potential employees in the district.

The population density in Sekyere West District is 61 persons per sq km far below the regional average of 131 persons per km ². The national population density of 73 people per km ² is below. 87.6 percent are Christians, Muslims 10.9 percent and 1.1 percent followers of traditional religions. More 0.4 percent are followers of other faiths.

In Mampong, Nsuta, Kwamang and Beposo four important traditional rulers are established. In Mampong the festival Kontonkyi is held in honor of resident Paramount Chief on the Siberthron.

Economy

The economy in the Sekyere West District is dominated by the agricultural sector, where 60.8 percent of all employees work. Approximately 17.2 percent of the population work in the service sector, 12.4 percent in trade and sales, 9.6 percent in industry.

Agriculture

Agriculture is mainly operated to this day in traditional form. The main products of the farms are cassava, maize, yam, plantains, peanuts, onions, tomatoes, carrots, palm oil, citrus and teak plantations.

The rearing of poultry and other animal species is part of the agricultural production in the district.

Industry

From the industrial enterprises in 58 percent based on the processing of agricultural products of the district. An additional 35 percent of the industrial enterprises are active in the field of wood processing. Metal processing companies provide 7 percent of industrial establishments in the district.

Water supply and infrastructure

The Ghana Commercial Bank Ltd. has opened stores in Mampong and Otuasekan. A local bank has opened branches from Kofiase in Mampong. The Kwamaman Rural Bank of Kwamang has branches in Mampong, Nsuta and Beposo that Nsutaman Rural Bank is based in Nsuta.

In the district markets in Mampong ( Wednesday), Kofiase (Friday), Nsuta ( Thursday) and Jeduako (Tuesday) will be held weekly. In smaller towns, markets are held daily.

Major roads run between Ninting and Aframso. This road is part piece of the connection between Kumasi and Yeji. Overall, a distance of 47.3 kilometers of paved road between Ninting and Aframso is available. Other 318.2 km consist of unpaved roads to larger settlements. 144.8 km are poorly developed roads in the smaller settlements in the district, especially in the Afram Plains located.

Education and health

In Sekyere West District, there are 203 schools. This accounts for 122 primary schools (103 public, 19 private ), 72 Junior Secondary Schools ( 68 public, 4 private ) and four Senior Secondary Schools. Also, a vocational school, two teacher training centers and a university campus are located in the district.

In Mampong a government hospital was established. A further seven health centers there are in Asaam, Kofiase, Benim, Kwamang, Birem, Krobo / Dadiese and Nsuta. Three birth centers are in Beposo, Birem and Mampong to disposal and other five utilities were opened in Mampong, Asaam, Nkuta, Kwamang and Birem.

Furthermore, there are six private clinics. These are the Catholic hospital in Oku, the Midwifery training institution, the organization Method in Isaakakrom that Philipa Maternity Home in Mampong, Agroyesum in Nsuta and St. Luke in Asubuasu. The distribution of health centers in the district remains inaccessible to two devices due to the removal of the population in the Afram Mountains ( Afram Plains ).

In January 2002, a total of 252 people were employed in the health sector. Among them were seven doctors (two interns ), 93 nurses, 115 paramedical staff, 15 Station Wizard, 16 surgical nurses and six medical assistants.

Constituencies

In the district Kwabre two constituencies were established. In the constituency Nsuta - Kwamang won in the parliamentary elections in 2004, Kwame Osei - Prempeh for the New Patriotic Party (NPP ) the seat in the Ghanaian parliament. For the constituency Mampong Peter abum Sarkodie was chosen by the NPP.
