Maroš Šefčovič

Maroš Šefčovič ( born July 24, 1966 in Bratislava) is a Slovak diplomat and politician. Since 2009 he is member of the European Commission.

Šefčovič studied from 1984 to 1985 at the University of Economics in Bratislava and from 1985 to 1990 at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. In 1990 he completed his studies with a professional doctorate ( JUDr. ) of Law at Comenius University, Bratislava; 1996-2000 he added it to a PhD program, also at the Comenius University.

1990 Šefčovič worked as an advisor to the Deputy Foreign Minister of Czechoslovakia. From 1991, he pursued a diplomatic career, during which he, among other things in Harare (Zimbabwe ) and Ottawa (Canada) worked. In 1998 he was briefly Head of Office of the Slovak Foreign Minister, after which he was appointed Deputy Head of the Slovak representation to the European Union and in 1999 ambassador to Israel. In 2003 he became Director General in the Department of "European Affairs " of the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the following year he was employed after the EU accession of Slovakia representative of his country to the EU.

A post he took up in 2009. In this year he became the successor of Ján Figel ', as a member of the EU Commission Barroso, where he was initially responsible for education, training and culture. Since 10 February 2010, he is Vice- President of the Commission and Commissioner for Institutional Relations and Administration.

Šefčovič is married and has three children.
