Mazandaran Province

Māzandarān (Persian مازندران ) is an Iranian province. It emerged from the old province Tabaristan. The capital is sari.

In the province of 2,920,657 people ( 2006 census ). The province is 23,701 square kilometers. The population density is 123 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Language

In Māzandarān the Mazandaranische language ( Mazandarani ) is spoken. Among the living Iranian languages ​​it has the oldest written tradition.

History

Māzandarān in ancient times was part of Tabaristan. Here local dynasties were able to repeatedly establish a certain independence from the surrounding states. The best known example is the Ziyariden who ruled between 928-1090. Māzandarān is frequently mentioned in the Shahnameh of Firdausi.

Geography

The border with the province of Tehran runs over the Damāvand, the highest 5671 m summit of the mighty Alborz Mountains (pers. Alborz ). A further 50 km to the south lies the capital Tehran. By Alborz Mountains Māzandarān is shielded from the dry desert inland. On the mountain slopes has a temperate, relatively humid climate here grow foothills of Hyrcanischen forest. At these temperate rainforest, the Alborz forest-steppe closes with a rather dry climate.

Agriculture

The loquat is grown on the Caspian Sea in Māzandarān. In addition, in the lowlands Mazandarans rice is grown and in Damavand Mountains near the town Firouzkuh are large potato fields to see. It is known Mazandaran further for oranges (pers.: Narenj ) and figs ( pers: Anjir ).
