Meussia

Meussia is a commune in the French department of Jura in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Meussia is located on 565 m above sea level. M., about 16 km northwest of the town of Saint- Claude ( straight line ). The farming village extends in the Jura, on a high plateau between the valley section of the Vouglan in the west and the forested chain of the high Jura in the east.

The area of ​​13.64 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The western part of the municipality is occupied by the plateau east of the Vouglan, which on average to 560 m above sea level. M. lies. History

The territory of Meussia been inhabited since the Gallo- Roman period. First mentioned is the place in the 9th century under the name Musciacum. In the Middle Ages Meussia formed its own, independent of the Barony of Moirans Kastlanei. The castle was destroyed in 1637 by French troops. Together with the Franche -Comté Meussia came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

Population

With 446 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Meussia one of the small towns in the Jura.
