Mike Burton (swimmer)

Michael " Mike" Jay Burton ( born June 3, 1947 in Des Moines ) is a retired American swimmer.

With twelve years Burton has been approached on a bicycle by a truck and was then due to hip injuries no longer operate sports except swimming. As a swimmer, he became one of the best long-distance swimmer of his time. He set seven world records and 16 U.S. records, ten times he was U.S. champion. Burton was the first swimmer who swam the 1650 -yard distance in 16 minutes and also the first that swam 800 meters under 8:30 minutes.

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, he was over 400 m and 1500 m freestyle Olympic champion. In Munich in 1972 he was able to repeat his Olympic victory over 1500 m freestyle. In 1977 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the international swimming sport.
