Milwaukee [ ˌ ki ː mɪlwɑ ] is the largest city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Milwaukee has 594 833 inhabitants ( 2010). The Milwaukee metropolitan area has 1,751,316 inhabitants ( census 2010).

The name " Milwaukee " comes perhaps from the Algonquian language of the Potawatomi ( minwaking ) or Ojibwe ( ominowakiing ), meaning " meeting place ( on the water) ."

Milwaukee is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan at the confluence of three rivers: the Menomonee River, Kinnickinnic River and the Milwaukee River.

History

First settlers in Milwaukee was the French Canadians Alexis Laframboise, who set up a trading post in 1785. From 1818 to 1834 founded in the area Byron Kilbourn, Solomon Juneau and George H.
