Mount Stirling is a mountain in the east of the Australian state of Victoria. It is part of the Great Dividing Range and is located about 130 km northeast of the city center of Melbourne, close to the ski resort of Mount Buller.

Mount Stirling is a popular ski destination for skiers and snowboarders and beginners especially offers good sports facilities.

Mount Stirling Alpine Resort is unincorporated territory surrounded by the Mansfield Shire Local Government Area.

At Mount Stirling stems from the Delatite River and flows west. Around the mountain leads the Stirling Circuit Road, which further serves as an access road for the mountains in the Victorian Alps. In winter, this road is closed at the Telephone Box Junction. From this point one can reach the mountain peak on touring skis when the snow conditions are adequate for it.

Mount Stirling offers views of the nearby Mount Buller and the corona of the higher mountains to the east of Mount Cobbler ( 1,628 m) on Mount Speculation and the croos cut Saw to Mount Howitt ( 1,742 m). There the mountain range turns west and ends at The Bluff, a sloping plateau that suddenly crashes on its north side.

On the lower slopes of the mountain is dominated by Alpine Ash forests (Eucalyptus delegatensis ), which give way to snow - Eucalyptus woodland from 1,400 m altitude. A small portion of the summit area is above the tree line.

In the area around Mount Stirling there are a number of mountain huts that serve as shelter for visitors to the area.

  • The Bluff Trail Hut is a shelter near the summit, which was erected in honor of some skiers who died on this mountain of hypothermia.
  • The King Saddle Shelter is an open shelter amid huge Alpine Ash trees.
  • The Howqua Gap Hut was originally used as accommodation for the woodworker and has been implemented around the mountain again and again. Finally, it was allowed to stand at the beginning of '' Howqua Gap Trails ''.
  • The Geelong Grammar School hat on the side opposite the Bluff track side of the mountain belongs to the '' Geelong Grammer School serves students '' and the '' '' Timbertop campus as a shelter for ski touring.
  • The Craig 's Hut in the '' Clear Hills '', which was built as a set for the 1982 film shot '' The Man from Snowy River '', was destroyed on 11 December 2006 by a forest fire, but meanwhile rebuilt.
  • The Mount No 3 Refuge Hut was rebuilt in 2007.
  • The bus Hut ' is located on the Mount '' Number 3 Road ''.

Winter

In winter, the area is a monitored winter sports area for cross-country skiers and ski tourers.

Summer

In summer the area for off-road riders and hikers. The route of the ring road leads to 2 hours to the summit and is used by day trippers and overnight guests.

Unless it snows or forest fire danger, the territory of different groups of students is used.
