Moyenvic

Moyenvic is a commune with 373 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district of Château- Salins and the canton of Vic- sur- seille.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the Moyenvic seille, a tributary of the Moselle River, seven kilometers south-east of Château- Salins. The 14.48 km ² comprehensive community area is bounded on the south by the department of Meurthe -et -Moselle.

History

The town was first mentioned in 836 as median Vicus, the name derives from its central location between the historic centers of Vic- sur- seille and Marsal in Saulnois. In Moyenvic since pre-Roman times salt was mined until the last saline was closed due to unprofitability in 1831.

Since 1661 belongs to the place with France. From 1871 to 1918, the town belonged again to the German Empire, 1915-18 he wore the Germanized name Medewich.

During the Second World War, the village population was expelled by the Germans up to three families, the abandoned village was 1940-44 the name Mettwich. In September 1944 Moyenvic was liberated by the Americans and almost completely destroyed in the fighting.
