Naefels

Naefels is a former municipality in the Swiss canton of Glarus. It was the end of 2010 with nearly 4000 inhabitants, the second largest municipality in the canton.

The village was merged on 1 January 2011 as part of the Glarus municipality reform with the communities Bilten, Filzbach, Mollis, mill Horn, Lower urns, urns and top fruit Alden to the new unified community Glarus Nord.

Geography

Naefels lies in the east of Switzerland, about 50 km south-east from Zurich to 437 meters above sea level. The Rautispitz as the highest point of Naefels is on 2283 meters above the sea.

History

The village name Naefels goes back to the Roman colonization. The Latin root word " Novale " means new territory. In Romansh this term was changed in the majority to " Novalis ". In the further language development was " navalias " and from today's word Naefels.

1388 the battle of Naefels took place, in which the Confederates defeated the Habsburgs. At this battle, a monument and the annual Näfelserfahrt.

That Naefels a village with "history" is witnessed by the numerous historical buildings in the village. For example, the built in 1642-1647 Freulerpalast ( museum in the country Glarus ), which was built by Fridli Tolder 1551 Tolderhaus that Hilary Church or erected on the major landslide hill Franciscan Maria Castle, which was just like the Tolderhaus renovated.

Tourism

Traffic

Naefels is on the railway line Rapperswil- Uznach - Linthal. Due to the station in the neighboring brick bridge Naefels is also well connected to the main rail route between Basel and Zurich -Sargans -Chur.

Near the A3 motorway ( Zurich -Sargans -Chur ), which is accessible via the low urns / Glarus connection runs.

Sports

As the site of the SGU SGU Naefels has a large number of sports clubs. The arena is also home to the series champion in men's volleyball, volley SEAT Naefels (formerly MTV Naefels ).
