Matt, Switzerland

Matt is a former municipality in the canton of Glarus in Switzerland.

It was in the context of the Glarus municipality reform on 1 January 2011 with the communities Betschwanden, Braunwald, Elm, Engi, Haslen, Linthal, Luchsingen, Mitlödi, Ruti ( GL), Schwanden ( GL), Schwändi, and Sool to the new municipality of Glarus South merged.

Coat of arms

The favorite for the village youth age-old custom of Schybenfleuge exerted during carnival time. This glowing wooden discs are thrown into the darkness of the night. The custom has been found in the coat of arms of input. The coat of arms was adopted on 12 June 1941.

Geography

The village lies in Sernftal at the Sernf, the right tributary of the Linth. It is the middle of three villages in the valley. The opening out of East Chrauchbach superimposed on the output of Chrauchtals from an alluvial fan where the first settlement was founded. But the settlement area also includes the hamlet Trämlingen, floodplains, Brumbach Stalden and located to the south, inhabited year-round sun terrace Weissenberge. The municipal area consists of steep forested mountain slopes, high altitude Alpine and among other Spitzmeilen ( 2501 m above sea level. M. ) and Foostock ( 2610 m above sea level. Population

From 560 people in 1960, the population dropped to 366 in 165 households in 2003.

The SP has 59% of the vote, 40 % of the votes going to other parties.

Economy

And Alpine farming and slate mining in the neighboring country Plattenberg in Engi were to the 20th century, the main sources of income of the inhabitants of Matt. Something industry, including the oldest construction company in the canton of Glarus, Marti AG (founded in 1860), has been well established. Traffic

Since the closure of Sernftalbahn in 1969 is the main road for the private and the bus operation of the auto companies Sernftal AG the only transport infrastructure of Matt.

Tourism

The construction of the cableway Matt White Mountains (LMW ) in 1967 has led to a tourist development of Matt and the higher parts of the municipality. The sunny terrace terrain at an altitude of 1300 m is a destination and resort.

History

The first mention of Matt, then an estate called Mattun, is occupied in 1273. The place name derives from its original meaning meadow.

The first chapel was built in 1261-1273. In 1273, the chapel has been raised to Talkirche. Until the redemption of the Glarus 1395 Matter were the monastery Säckingen dutiable.

The present church probably dates from 1497 and is the oldest surviving church in the Canton of Glarus. Inside there is a significant late Gothic wooden ceiling. Since the transition to the Reformation in 1528 Matt and Engi form a common parish.

The management of Egg, Riseten and Krauchtals, which represents the largest alp of Canton, is mentioned in a document in 1350. Since 1767 the water power for saw mills, and mill Stampferei used. Later, the cotton mill of Jacob Spälty was added. The company was founded in 1868 closed down in 1967.

Personalities

Oswald Heer, (* 1809 † September 27, 1883 in Lausanne) was a Swiss paleontologist, botanist and entomologist. He lived in 1817 with his parents in Matt.
