Navajún

Navajún is a municipality in the Autonomous Community of La Rioja, Spain. It was first mentioned in records in 1381 for donations of Enrique II of Trastámara to Juan Ramirez de Arellano as gratitude for his support in the fight against Peter the Cruel. The town's name probably comes from the pre-Roman term Nava, meaning in Basque width and is due to the fact that the city has an equal North -South and East-West expansion.

Worldwide known for its Navajún pyrite mine, which was discovered in 1960 by the miner Pedro Ansorena. Here perfectly cubic pyrite cubes can be promoted. The mine was never used for industrial purposes, but only for mineralogical purposes. Particularly beautiful specimens are located in all major natural history museums.
