History

As early as the 1910s, motor sports events were held at the Speedway, the history of modern Nazareth Speedway began in 1966, when it was renovated and reopened in April 1966 as Speedway with five curves and a length of 1.126 miles. At that time it was a pure dirt track on loose ground, on the race of the Whelen Modified Tour were held. In the first and only event of 1966 Frankie Schneider scored both Qualifikationsszeit Provides the fastest, won his heat and the main event.

In 1967, a total of nine races were held, as many as in any other year. Of these nine races Schneider won five. The following year, Schneider won three of the five events. On 13 July 1968, the first race in the USAC National Championship was held at the Nazareth Speedway, the Al Unser won ahead of local hero Mario Andretti.

Between October 15, 1966, the closing on November 7, 1971 a total of 52 races were held on the Speedway. The most successful driver was Frankie Schneider, who won a total of eleven races.

In 1982 Lindy Vicari took over the race track and shortened it to a length of a mile. After only two years the speedway was closed again and purchased in 1986 by Roger Penske. Then it was renovated and paved. In 1987 the re- opening took place as Pennsylvania International Raceway. At that time, she was the first oval race track that had an extra warm-up track for entering and leaving the pit lane. The superelevation was between 2.7 ° and 6 °, the back straight was 1200 feet (about 366 m) and the start -finish straight 800 feet (about 244 m ) long. Further renovations were made in 1997, when the outer wall and fencing renewed, and new grandstands were built.

The reopening of 1987, as a slightly reconfigured one- mile oval, although architects and participants knew that the lap length was less than a mile. It was not until 1998, the official length of 0.946 miles ( 1.52 miles) was corrected by CART. Accordingly, the race distance was corrected from 200 to 225 rounds. A special feature of this tri- oval is its asymmetrical design. The kink represents the first curve is not exactly in the middle, so the start -finish line as slightly longer straight between turn 1 and 2. The only two comparable routes are the Phoenix International Raceway and the Walt Disney World Speedway.

Concurrent with the re-opening of the Nazareth Speedway was added to the race calendar of the NASCAR Busch Series, which fought out until closing in 2004 race here. From 1997, the Craftsman Truck Series was a guest which fought out to 2001 race at the track.

In 1999, the International Speedway Corporation ( ISC) bought the Nazareth Speedway. Although the race in the Busch Series and the IndyCar Series have been relatively successful, the speedway was closed at end of season 2004. The races have been replaced with events at Watkins Glen and on other ISC tracks. The Speedway since then has been for sale and has been dismantled as far as possible. The renewed only in 1997 stands were rebuilt in Watkins Glen.
