Novokhopyorsk

Nowochopjorsk (Russian Новохопёрск; German also falsely Nowochopersk ) is a small town in Voronezh Oblast (Russia) with 6849 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located on the southeastern edge of the Oka -Don plain about 270 km southeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Voronezh on the right bank of the Chopjor, a left tributary of the Don.

Nowochopjorsk is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

Five kilometers west of the city is its railway station on the opened on this section 1895 railway Kharkiv Balashov - Pensa. To the station extends the urban-type settlement Nowochopjorski, in which the city virtually merges seamlessly and now about as many inhabitants as the city itself

History

Since the mid-17th century in the territory of the present-day city was a Cossack settlement called Pristanski known ( from Russian pristan for (ship ) pier). This settlement was destroyed during the Cossack uprising Ataman Kondrati Bulavin (1660-1708) in 1708.

1710 on ukase of Peter the Great built here a fortress with shipyard and called (derived from the river name ) Chopjorskaja. This year is considered the founding year of the city.

1779 was the present name the town charter ( nowo - Russian for new ).

Culture and sights

The city has a museum of local history.

Upstream along the Chopjor extends from Nowochopjorsk towards Borisoglebsk the Chopjor Nature Reserve ( Chopjorski sapowednik ). It was created in 1935 to protect the wetlands of Chopjortales and various forest types of the forest-steppe zone of the south-central Russia and its wildlife, and is now 16 178 hectares. His office is located in the village of Warwarino Rajons Nowochopjorsk.

Economy

In Nowochopjorsk there are companies in the food and wood processing industry and the building materials industry.
