History

The Frankish settlement Ostheim vor der Rhön was probably founded around 525 and 804 mentioned for the first time in a document. The taverns of Großvargula owned 1214 in Ostheim own goods and fief of the Abbey of Fulda and the Landgrave of Thuringia. The Office Lichtenberg to the Ostheim and Urspringen belonged, was formerly an office of the county Henneberg - Römhild and later the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar- Eisenach. 1920, the exclave Ostheim the newly founded state of Thuringia and was part of the district of Eisenach. 1945 Ostheim was assigned as part of the American occupation zone the Free State of Bavaria and Thuringia, Enclave stood as under Bavarian administration. On 1 July 1972, the formerly independent municipalities were integrated Oberwaldbehrungen and Urspringen.

Mayor

Mayor Ulrich Waldsachs ( CSU FWG ) located in the first round with 66.29 % of the vote against Ulrike Stanek (SPD; 25.21% ) and Horst Werner ( OL -WV; 8.50% ) prevailed.

Parish council

The local council of Ostheim consists of 16 members and the mayor. Since the last municipal election in 2008, the CDU Community Ostheim holds 6 seats, 5 per account for the CSU and the SPD.

Local specialties

A local specialty is the Ostheimer meat loaf, not the meatloaf is, despite its name, as is common in southern Germany. It is made like a terrine of pork, 90 percent and 10 percent pork liver. The meat is still hot processed immediately after slaughter, which improves the taste. The medium- coarse, spiced with nutmeg meat dough wrapped a pork network that produces a fine crust during baking. Media

In Ostheim since March 23, 1907, the Ostheimer newspaper, the smallest local newspaper in Germany appears with about 900 copies. It is published and printed by a local publisher Gunzenheimer. In the 1976 released movie Over time, by Wim Wenders a key scene takes place in the printing of the Ostheimer newspaper instead, in the co-star, Robert, played by Hanns Hisser, at first bitterly with his father, the editor, dealing, but then reconciled with him.

  • Hartmann Schenk ( born April 7, 1634 Ruhla in Eisenach ), the high schools attended to Eisenach and Coburg, went in 1656 to the University of Helmstedt, 1657 in Jena, was in 1662 a pastor in Bibra, 1669 Deacon in Ostheim vor der Rhön and pastor in Völkershausen, where he died on May 2, 1681.
