Hendungen is located in the Main- Rhön.
Hendungen divided into two districts ::
- Hendungen
- Rappershausen
There are the districts Hendungen and Rappershausen. About a kilometer south of Rappershausen is the deserted village Uttenhausen.
History
Prehistory and Early History
The Orstnamenendung " -ingen " or " -ments " suggests a naming at the time of Thuringia colonization of the 5th and 6th century.
Middle Ages
Probably the majority of Hendungens, including 14 hooves, 35 Manzipien and the St.. Mary and John the Baptist church, consecrated, was donated to the monastery Lorsch on April 14, 801 of Eckhart. Another part Hendungens was transferred by Count Erpho to the monastery of Fulda.
On October 21, 1232 included Prince Abbot Conrad III. of Fulda and Count Poppo VII of Henneberg a contract has been exchanged in the Hendungen against Helmershausen. Modern Times

With the Empire in 1803 the Bishopric of Würzburg was secularized and slammed most of the Electorate of Bavaria. In the Peace of Pressburg on December 26, 1805 Bavaria joined the Principality of Würzburg in exchange for Tirol to Elector Ferdinand III. from. Recent history
After several potential investors had found the power of the Rhön for not attractive enough, founded 47 municipalities of Bavaria, Hesse and Thuringia, including Hendungen, on 29 March 1920, the Überlandwerk Rhön GmbH, which is a 100% local company is today. Still on November 26, 1923 wrote the Prussian Minister of Trade and Industry said in a statement:
"It is to be feared that the Rhön population do not use this equipment and they still broke for years to come would leave. In order to maintain an emergency operation during the time of the reorganization, the 20 kilovolt Notverbindungen were activated for Überlandwerk Fulda AG ( ÜWAG ) and Überlandwerk Lower Franconia ( ÜWU ) and poorly reinforced. With major customer agreements were made on staggered break times to avoid a collapse of the supply network during peak periods. Within weeks, a new 30 -kilovolt line with more than 20 km in length from Bad Kissingen was built to the transformer station in Bad Neustadt.
On 1 July 1972, the district Mellrichstadt was affiliated in the course of municipal reform in Bavaria with the also defunct county Königshofen in the grave field the district of Bad Neustadt an der Saale. On 1 May 1973, the new county received its present designation district of Rhön - grave field.
Effective January 1, 1975, the administrative community Mellrichstadt was founded as the first administrative community in Lower Franconia; the service operations started on 1 July 1975. The member communities originally included the town Mellrichstadt (including the neighborhoods Frickenhausen, Roßrieth and Bahra ) and the municipalities Hendungen, Oberstreu and floor home. From 1 July 1976, the municipalities means good Rappershausen were added by ordinance of the Government of Lower Franconia.
On May 1, 1978 Rappershausen was incorporated into the municipality Hendungen.
The construction of the federal highway 71, the municipal Hendungen received a motorway junction, which, however, the term " junction Mellrichstadt " bears in December 2005.
