Geography

Geographical location

The community lies with its districts in the Hochrhön, on a slope, the water dome, the horse head and Eubeberges. Through the district Poppenhausen flows the Lütter, a tributary of the Fulda.

Neighboring communities

Poppenhausen bordered to the north by the municipalities and Hofbieber Hilders, in the north- east on the community Ehrenberg, on the southeast and south by the city Gersfeld, and to the west by the municipalities Ebersburg, Künzell and Dipperz (all in the district of Fulda ).

Structure

The municipality comprises the five districts Poppenhausen, Abtsroda ( with Sieblos and Tränkhof ) Gackenhof, Rodholz and stone wall.

The hamlet Gackenhof includes, but is the Hettenpaulshof. The old farm name is " Babelshof ". Until 2005, there was a more than 300 year old cottage extract, known to be found as Rhon hand weaving, in which Mrs. Agnes Diel wove until a few years also over 300 years old looms. One of these looms is exhibited in the tourist center Poppenhausen.

History

The village Poppenhausen arose in the 9th century. Its history is connected with the monastery of Fulda and the Knights of Ebersberg and Steinau / Steinrück. Under the Gasthof Stern and the Von Steinrück Square cellar of the former castle Poppenhausen are obtained.

1635 the plague raged in the area. Out of gratitude that the Pestgefahr was over, built the journeyman John Farnung 1639 a shrine. This local Pest and hail holiday is celebrated every year on this day with a pilgrimage to the chapel on the stone.

  • Northwest of Poppenhausen is the pilgrimage chapel of St. Mary in the stone. It was built in 1736 and has a stone pulpit, a Way of the Cross from 1765 and a crucifixion group.
  • In Sieblos Museum in the Town Hall fossil finds are exhibited from the lignite of Sieblos.

  • About four kilometers east of Poppenhausen is the natural Guckaisee.

Economy and infrastructure

The original agricultural community today provides about 800 jobs.
