Prešov Region

The Prešov Region ( German Prešov Region ) is an administrative region in the north-eastern Slovakia.

Geography

The Kraj has an area of ​​8974 km ², making it the second largest in terms of area and with 815 806 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011) and the most populous Kraj is located in eastern Slovakia. The landscape is diverse, but is of medium and high mountains dominated ( in the west). This is where the Western and Eastern Carpathians. In the western part of the Tatra mountains dominates with its partial ( High Tatras and Belianske Tatras); a small foothills of the Low Tatras ranges in the area. Lower mountains are the Kozie chrbty, Zipser Magura, Pieniny, Levočské mountains and the Branisko; in the north, the Ľubovnianska Highlands is located. The population is concentrated in the sub- Tatra and Hornád boiler. In the central part around the Prešov Šarišská Highlands, Čergov, Ondavská Highlands is (part of the Low Beskid ), the Slanské Hills and other mountains; the city itself with neighboring communities located in Košice boiler. To the east are some spur of the East Slovak Lowland; on the other hand is dominated here by mountains. These include the Laborecká Highlands (part of the Low Beskid ), Bukovské Hills and the Vihorlat. The main ridge of the Carpathians is characterized by various strategic in the history of passports, for example, the Duklapass. A remarkable river is the Poprad ( river ) in the northwest, which is the only major Slovak river flows towards the north, and thus belongs to the Vistula river system ( flowing into the sea ). There are five national parks that are located entirely or partially in Kraj: Low Tatras ( NAPANT, Low Tatras ), the Tatranský Národný park ( TANAP, Tatra National Park), Pieniny ( PIENAP, Pieniny ), Slovenský raj ( Slovak Paradise ) and Poloniny. In addition, two areas are managed as conservation areas: Východné Karpaty ( Eastern Carpathians ) and Vihorlat.

Administratively borders of the territory to the Polish voivodeships of Lesser Poland and Subcarpathian in the north and northeast, at the Ukrainian Transcarpathian Oblast in the east, to the Košice Region in the south, Banskobystrický kraj in the southwest and Žilinský in the West.

Historical administrative units

In the Kingdom of Hungary, it served four counties: smaller parts of the county Liptau lay in the far west, while the Zips county was located in almost all the West. The county damage Rosh was to the town of Prešov and county Semplin covered the eastern part of the territory. The population density is 90/km ², lower than the Slovak average ( 110/km ²). The capital is Prešov (German Eperies in WW2 also Presov ), other major cities are for example Poprad ( Poprad ), High Tatras and Humenné (see also the list of districts). Overall, the landscape association of 666 municipalities, 23 towns and the military area Valaškovce. The Slovaks form according to the 2001 census 90.7 % of the population. There is also a Roma minority (4% ) and smaller minorities of Russian women ( 2.7%) and Ukrainians ( 0.9%).

After religion, the Roman Catholic Church is the most represented with 67 %; the second place is the most strongly represented here Greek Catholic Church, at 15.3 %; more churches are the Evangelical Church AB with 5.1% and the Orthodox Church with 4%. 5.6% of residents identified themselves as atheists.
