Project 57

Project 57 was a nuclear weapons test in the United States in April 1957, which was conducted at the Nevada Test Site. Objective of the test was to test the resilience of the warheads in the case of a previous random detonation. This requires further nuclear weapons were asymmetrically ignited to simulate accidental ignition. An uncontrolled detonation could be prevented.

The contaminated area was initially fenced and bury the equipment in place. In 1981 the area was decontaminated by the U.S. Department of Energy, and then shut down. Hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of soil and debris were removed from Area 13 and disposed of in a waste facility in the Nevada Test Site.
