Project Chariot

Operation Chariot was planned in 1958 by the United States Atomic Energy Commission to establish by the ignition of a series of nuclear bombs an artificial harbor in Cape Thompson, Alaska. The plan was developed as part of Operation Plowshare ("Operation Plowshare " ), an attempt was made in the framework to find civilian applications of nuclear explosions. The plan has been pursued by many stakeholders and a significant supporter was the Hungarian- American physicist Edward Teller. This plan was only rejected in 1962 under the government Kennedys. This was due to the objections of the local population in Point Hope and the fact that no use for the port was detected.
