Rob Ray

Rob Ray (* June 8, 1968 in Stirling, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey forward who was active for the Buffalo Sabres and Ottawa Senators. During his active years he made a name for himself as enforcer. Currently commented and he analyzes the games of the Buffalo Sabres during television broadcasts.

Career

Rob Ray began his career in 1985 in the Canadian Junior Football League OHL at the Cornwall Royals. Already there he showed that the hard physical game was his strength and he also did not shrink to let fists fly. So he cashed in his first year 253 penalty minutes in 53 games. But even playful he grew and was able to post 88 in the season 1987 / eleven goals and 40 assists for yourself.

In the NHL Entry Draft 1988, he was selected by the Buffalo Sabres 97 in the fifth round in position and joined for the 1988/89 season, the Rochester Americans in, the AHL farm team of the Sabres. The following year he came to his first stakes in the NHL and was from the season 1990/91 to the root of the Buffalo Sabres and the squad for more than ten years.

1990/91 he managed with eight goals and eight assists his Career. But his main task during his time in Buffalo was to protect the star players and often with his fists. He became thereby one of the most well-known enforcer of his time and met frequently with other specialists in this field, such as Tie Domi or Jeff Odgers each other. His biggest success Ray, when he entered with the Sabres into the finals for the Stanley Cup in the 1998/99 season, but lost there to the Dallas Stars. A few days later he was at the award ceremony of the 1999 NHL Awards awarded the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, which receives the NHL players that protrudes through leadership and community involvement. Was he feared on the ice because of its hardness, he was active off the ice for the Make-a -wish Foundation, a children's hospital and the Rosewell Park Cancer Institute.

In March 2003, his almost 14 years as part ended with the Buffalo Sabres, when he was transferred to the Ottawa Senators. For the Senators, he completed the following season only six games and came five times for the AHL farm team Binghamton Senators used, before he ended his career in February 2004.

Meanwhile, Rob Ray is back in Buffalo and is part of the TV crew of the Buffalo Sabres. During the games he is in a small space between the substitutes' benches of teams where he commented on and after the games he analyzed what happened as an expert.

  • " Rayzor " as he was called, lasted NHL career delivered during his 15 years around 250 fist fights and received 3207 penalty minutes. With 3189 penalty minutes for the Buffalo Sabres, he holds the record as the player who collects the most penalty minutes for a team.
  • Rob Ray created to fight during his time with the Buffalo Sabres a separate species. If an opponent and he were ready for a fight and dropped the gloves, got rid of in addition of his helmet, his shirt and his protective equipment, so that he only fought bare-chested. Thus he offered his opponent no chance to hold on to him and was so during the fight in the clear advantage and was able to control the fight. The NHL then led a rule that forbade the players take off their shirts and torso protection in a brawl. The rule then was given the nickname " Rob Ray Rule"
