Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. John's, Newfoundland

The Archdiocese of Saint John's, Newfoundland (Latin: Sancti Ioannis Terrae Novae Archidioecesis ) is a location in Canada Roman Catholic archdiocese headquartered in St. John's.

History

The Archdiocese of Saint John's, Newfoundland was on May 30, 1784 Pope Pius VI. established as Apostolic Prefecture of Newfoundland. The Apostolic Prefecture of Newfoundland on January 5, 1796 Pius VI. elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate. On June 4, 1847 the Vicariate Apostolic of Newfoundland was by Pope Pius IX. raised to the bishopric. The Diocese of Newfoundland announced on February 29, 1856 from parts of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of Harbour Grace.

On February 29, 1856, the diocese was renamed the Diocese of Newfoundland St. John's, Newfoundland. The Diocese of Saint John's, Newfoundland announced on May 9, 1870 from parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Western Newfoundland. A further transfer of territory took place on September 16, 1870 establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Placentia. 1891, the Apostolic Prefecture of Placentia was again dissolved and the territory was the Archdiocese of Saint John's, Newfoundland affiliated. On 8 February 1904, the Diocese of Saint John's, Newfoundland was elevated to an archdiocese by Pope Pius X..
