Roman Catholicism in Ghana

The Roman Catholic Church in Ghana is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope and curia in Rome.

Organization

15 % of Ghanaians are Catholics. The largest diocese, Kumasi, counts 374,000 Catholics. It is followed by the Diocese of Sekondi -Takoradi with 332 732 and the Archdiocese of Cape Coast with 305 812 Catholics.

Peter Cardinal Turkson, Archbishop of Cape Coast, was appointed by Pope John Paul II for the first Ghanaian cardinal in 2003. Pope John Paul II visited in 1980 Ghana.
