Sallanches

Sallanches is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region. It is the capital of the canton in the Arrondissement Sallanches Bonneville.

Geography

Sallanches is located at 551 m above sea level. M., south of Cluses, about 50 km southeast of the city of Geneva (air line). The city covers a scenic location with views of Mont Blanc on the alluvial fan of the river Sallanches on the western edge of the Arvetals, between the peaks of the Pointe Percée the west and the Tête du Colonney in the east.

The area of ​​65.87 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the upper Arvetals. The area is crossed from south to north of the Arve in a modeled out of the glacial trough valley glaciers. The flat valley floor has a width of about 2 km. To the east, the municipality area extends over a criss-crossed by numerous rock bands steep slope down to the jagged limestone peaks of the Aiguille de Varan ( 2640 m above sea level. History

Excavations in the area of the church remains of an early Christian settlement have been unearthed, which was probably inhabited in the 5th and 6th centuries. The Latin name of the village was Salancia Sabaudiorum. In the 13th century, when Sallanches was granted certain liberties, the place became an economic and religious center of the upper Arvetals. In the Middle Ages Sallanches belonged to the rule Faucigny. As part of the Dauphiné reached the place in 1349 in France, but was delivered in a country Abtausch to the Counts of Savoy under the Treaty of Paris in 1355. Then Sallanches shared the fate of Savoy. At the beginning of the 17th century, a Capuchin and a Ursuline Convent was founded in the village who had survived until the French Revolution.

In the aftermath Sallanches was completely rebuilt in a checkerboard pattern. In 1977, the east of the Arve located village of Saint- Martin- sur -Arve was incorporated into Sallanches.

Attractions

The Collegiate Church of Saint -Jacques was built in 1688 and remodeled in the 19th century. Located in Saint -Martin- sur -Arve is a Baroque church, which was built in 1681. Almost everyone belonging to Sallanches hamlet has a chapel, mostly dating from the 17th to the 19th century.

The Town Hall (Hôtel de Ville) was built in 1846 in neo-classical style. It is decorated with wall paintings and has a rich interior (furniture) from the 16th and 17th centuries. Population

With 15,683 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Sallanches one of the largest municipalities in the department of Haute- Savoie. During the 20th century the population grew steadily. Outside the old town center and on the slopes of numerous single-family homes were built in the valley and developed commercial and industrial zones.

Economy and infrastructure

Sallanches was early an embossed by the industrial community. Today there are numerous companies in the community, whose size ranges from small businesses to large corporations. Furthermore Sallanches is developed since 1889 by leading through the Arve Valley rail line from La Roche- sur -Foron -Saint -Gervais.
