Sancey-le-Long

Sancey -le-Long is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Sancey -le-Long is on 505 m, 2 km north-east of Sancey -le- Grand and about 27 km southwest of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The former street village stretches in the Jura, on the eastern edge of the basin of Sancey ( Vallon de Sancey ) between the heights of Lomont the north and the plateau to the south, at the Ruisseau de la Baume.

The area of ​​7:02 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The central part of the area occupied by the basin of Sancey which forms a roughly 3 -km-wide level and average is 500 m. It is mainly consisted of arable and meadow land. The area is drained by the Ruisseau de la Baume west to the Ruisseau de Voitre. In the west of the municipality sufficient ground to the height of Orve ( to 640 m).

To the southeast, the municipality's area extends into the narrow upper valley portion of the Ruisseau de la Baume. The valley is flanked by steep, wooded slopes, which are about 100 meters high and crowned at the top at different locations of a Kalkfelsband. These steep slopes lead to the plateau (650 m) of the next higher layer level above, with the east, the Forêt du Chanois et épaisses and southwest of the projection of the Bois de l' Ouche is located on the 675 m, the highest elevation of Sancey -le- long is obtained. In the extreme southeast of the community land is the cauldron-like valley head, which is typical of a cuesta landscape.

To Sancey -le-Long are the northern district of Sancey- l'Église (500 m) at the northwest foot of the Bois de l' Ouche as well as some individual farms. Neighboring communities of Sancey -le-Long are Rahon and Belvoir in the north, Provenchère in the east, Surmont and Sancey -le- Grand in the south and Orve in the West.

History

Finds from the Bronze Age and the Iron Age in the caves of Baume de la Roche evidence of an early settlement of the area of Sancey -le- Long. As one of the earliest settlements in the Basin of Sancey to Sancey- l'Église established. In the Middle Ages Sancey -le-Long belonged to the dominion of Belvoir. The village was devastated in 1636 by troops of Duke Bernhard of Saxe- Weimar, where the inhabitants took refuge in the caves in the valley of the Ruisseau de la Baume. Together with the Franche -Comté came Sancey -le-Long with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

Attractions

The Basilica of Sainte- Jeanne- antide - Thouret was built at the beginning of the 20th century in the Romanesque Revival style. In the old town several farmhouses in the traditional style of the Franche-Comté are obtained, some of which come from the 16th century.

Population

With 352 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Sancey -le-Long is one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (1906 415 persons were still counted ), a population growth was recorded since the mid-1970s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Sancey -le- Long was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises, including two sawmills. Many workers are also commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road, leading from Sancey -le- Grand by Maîche. Further road links exist with Belvoir and L' Isle- sur -le- Doubs.

  • Johanna Antida Thouret (1765-1826), foundress and Catholic saint, was born in Sancey -le- Long.
