Saint-Georges-Armont

Saint -Georges- Armont is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Saint -Georges- Armont is located on 419 m, about 22 km southwest of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The village stretches a scenic location on the northern slopes of the Côte d' Armont, one of the extreme north-western mountain ranges of the Jura Mountains, about 140 m above the Talniederung of the Doubs.

The area of ​​4.74 km ² municipal area comprises a portion of Doubstals. The northern boundary runs along the Doubs, the multiple turn it flows through about one kilometer wide, flat Talniederung to the west and is accompanied by the waterways of the Rhine- Rhone Canal. From the river, the municipality's area extends southward over the floodplain and a 100 m high ground level to the terrace of Saint -Georges- Armont. This is dominated in the south by the wooded ridge of the Côte d' Armont, on the 550 m, the highest elevation of Saint -Georges- Armont is achieved. The northern slope of this ridge is divided by various gullies.

Neighboring municipalities of Saint -Georges- Armont are Pompierre -sur -Doubs in the north, rank in the east, the south and Anteuil Clerval in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages Saint -Georges belonged to the rule Neuchâtel. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. To avoid confusion with other communities of the same name, Saint -Georges was officially renamed in 1923 in Saint -Georges- Armont.

Population

With 120 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Saint -Georges- Armont is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1886 162 persons were still counted ), a population growth was recorded since the early 1970s again. Since then, the population has almost doubled.

Economy and infrastructure

Saint -Georges- Armont was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. Even today, the inhabitants live on the merits of the activity in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector, there are few jobs in the village. Some employed persons are also commuters who engage in the surrounding larger towns of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road, leading from Position Anteuil. The nearest links to the A36 motorway, which runs through the municipality, is located at a distance of about 8 km. Another road connection with Clerval.
