Santoche

Santoche is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Santoche is located on 286 m, 1 km north of Clerval and about 24 km southwest of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The village is located in the lowlands of Doubstals north of the river, at the northern foot of the Jura - edge chain ( Côte d' Armont ).

The area of ​​2.15 km ² municipal area comprises a portion of Doubstals. The southern and eastern boundary runs along the Doubs, the multiple turn it flows through about one kilometer wide, flat Talniederung and simultaneously forms the waterways of the Rhine- Rhone Canal. From the river, the municipality's area extends to the northwest on the flood plain adjacent to the high terrace which consists of glacial river deposits. Further to the north-west the land rises to the plateau of the Grand Bois. This is achieved with 385 m the highest elevation of Santoche.

Neighboring communities of Santoche are Fontaine -lès- Clerval and Pompierre -sur -Doubs in the north and Clerval in the east, south and west.

History

Various finds and the Dolmen evidence of a prehistoric settlement of the municipality of Santoche. During Roman times, the traffic route of Vesontio (Besançon) led to the Upper Rhine by the present village. In the Middle Ages Santoche belonged to the rule Clerval, which came under the suzerainty of the Counts of Montbéliard in the 14th century. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

Attractions

The chapel was built in 1671 by Santoche and has a statue of Saint- Ermenfroi, the village patron, from the 15th century. The Dolmen de la Pierre aux Gaulois was built around 3000 BC. On the banks of the Doubs is the so-called Motte de Jules César, probably a Gallic temple complex. It consists of a square hill surrounded by a grave system.

Population

With 77 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Santoche is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. Once the population has consistently had in the first half of the 20th century in the range of 25 to 42 people, a continuous population growth was recorded since the early 1970s. Since then, the population has more than doubled.

Economy and infrastructure

Santoche was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village. Today, the main employer of the village is a group company dispute, the mechanical components for automotive manufactures and around 150 people are employed. Thus Santoche has significantly fewer residents than jobs.

Although the village is off the major thoroughfares, but is easily accessible via normal anyway. The main access is from Clerval on the main road N83 (Besançon -Montbéliard ). The nearest links to the A36 motorway, which runs through the municipality, is located at a distance of about 12 km. Further road links exist with Soye and Pompierre -sur- Doubs. The nearest railway station on the railway line Besançon -Mulhouse is located about 1 km from the town center in Clerval.
