Sangüesa

Sangüesa is a point of the Camino in the Autonomous Region of Navarre.

It is the capital of the comarca of the same name and is located one kilometer downstream of the confluence of Aragon and Irati. Sangüesa bordered to the north Lumbier, Liédena and Javier, to the east by Sos del Rey Católico, to the south by the Sierra de Peña and Cáseda and to the west by Aibar.

History

In the 10th century Yesa was a bastion against the Moors and had special rights. Yesa was also the seat of the royal court of Navarre.

Attractions

The city still has medieval character. The Road to Santiago through the Calle Mayor in which the church of Santa María and interesting palaces are.

The church was built in different stages, the oldest of which dates back to the period around 1131, three apses, the tower was built in the 13th century. Facing the pilgrimage dominates the portal from the transitional period Romanesque - Gothic (. 12th-13th century) out with a representation of the Last Judgement. Inside there is a miraculous image of the Virgin of Rocamadour, which illustrates the influence of the French pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago.

  • Casa consistorial, the town hall, built in 1570 over a portion of the former palace of the kings of Navarre. The facade is decorated in the Renaissance style.
  • San Adrián de Vadoluengo, Romanesque building near Sanguesa on the road to Sos del Rey Católico.
