Simon Guggenheim

Simon Guggenheim ( born December 30, 1867 in Philadelphia, † November 2, 1941 in New York City ) was an American businessman and politician.

Life

Simon Guggenheim was born in 1867 as the son of Meyer Guggenheim and younger brother of Daniel Guggenheim and Solomon R. Guggenheim in Philadelphia. He lived for a time in Denver and represented 1907-1913 Colorado in the United States Senate for the Republican Party. During this time he was a member of the Committee to Establish a University of the United States. From 1919 to 1941 Simon Guggenheim was the president of the American Smelting and Refining Company.

Simon Guggenheim's wife was Olga Hirsh. Her son John Simon Guggenheim died in 1922 shortly after his birth. Together with his wife founded Simon Guggenheim in consequence the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, which awarded to American artist in memory of his son Guggenheim Fellowships. They also donated money to various educational institutions.
