SMA Solar Technology AG (originally for " system, measuring and installation engineering ") is the world's largest producer and Germany's best-known manufacturer of inverters for photovoltaic systems with power supply, mains-independent power supply and backup operations.

The headquarters is in the northern Hessian Niestetal near Kassel, the company has offices in 21 countries. SMA Solar Technology AG was formed - as well as the SMA Railway Technology GmbH - from the former SMA Technologie AG. End of December 2012 were employed 5584 employees. History

SMA was founded in 1981 by Werner Klein purchase and the board members Günther Cramer, Peter Drews and Reiner Wettlaufer under the name of SMA Control Systems GmbH as an independent company from the University of Kassel out and renamed 2004 SMA Technologie AG to. In 2006 Urbon has expanded the Board. In June 2008, the name was changed to the present, in order to underline the strong focus on solar technology and to become the internationalization of the company. At the same time, the division railway technology was spun off in the SMA Railway Technology GmbH.

Larger changes in the Board became effective after the AGM on 10 June 2009. The founder Reiner Wettlaufer joined the Supervisory Board. Products

SMA sells solar technology inverter as product families "Sunny Boy" ( for small and home systems and solar trees), "Sunny Mini Central" or "Sunny Tripower " ( for medium-sized systems from 5 kW up to the megawatt range ) and "Sunny Central" ( for open space systems and solar parks from 100 kW up to the megawatt range, such as the solar system in the energy Waldpolenz with 40 MW) to be fed into the grid as well as "Sunny Iceland " for independent grid systems.
