Softball at the 2008 Summer Olympics

The XXIX. 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing was held a competition in softball. Am tournament at the women participated in eight teams. Each country was allowed to plan a maximum of one team, each with 15 players, resulting in a total number of 120 participating athletes revealed in this competition. The International Olympic Committee has decided to take softball out of the Olympic Summer Games program in 2012. Thus, this sport was held provisionally for the last time at the Olympic Games.

Qualification

In addition to the People's Republic of China, the host, the top four teams at the World Cup in 2006 and in each case the winner had qualified at the three continental championships in the Americas, Asia / Oceania and Europe / Africa for the Olympic competition. World cup

From 27 August 2006 to 5 September 2006, the World Championship with 16 teams was held in the Chinese capital Beijing. Of these, four qualified directly for the competition in Beijing. All games were played at the stadium " Fengtai " on two different playing fields.

In group A qualified after 28 games, the teams from the United States, the People's Republic of China, Canada and Italy. The other four teams could not qualify for the next round.

After a total of eleven Final round games, the United States, Japan, Australia and Canada qualified for the Olympic competition. Canada qualified as fifth-placed team, as the People's Republic of China qualifies automatically as host of the Olympic Games. The final ranking of the teams in this competition is as follows:

From 19 August 2007 to 23 August 2007, the American qualifying tournament with three teams took place in Valencia, the third largest city in Venezuela instead. Of these, a qualified directly for the competition in Beijing. All games were played at the stadium " Martha Medina ".

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round, each team played twice against the other two teams. In the final round came as Venezuela and Puerto Rico. In the final round, these two teams then played against each other twice.

If after these two games of the final round stood firm no definitive winner, it would have come 24 August 2007 at 17:00 clock to another meeting. After two games, however, qualified the team from Venezuela for the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Asia and Oceania

From 1 February 2007 to 6 February 2007, the Asian and Oceanian qualifying tournament with six teams was held in Tainan. Of these, a qualified directly for the competition in Beijing. All games were played at the stadium " Tainan ".

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round, each team played twice against the other five teams. In the final round came as the Republic of China and New Zealand. In the final round, these two teams then played against each other twice.

If after these two games of the final round stood firm no definitive winner, it would have come on 7 February 2007 at 11:00 clock to another meeting. After two games, however, qualified the team from the Republic of China for the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Europe and Africa

From 9 June 2007 to 16 June 2007, the European and African qualifying tournament with eleven teams took place in the northern Italian city of Trieste. Of these, a qualified directly for the competition in Beijing. The Games were held in the three stages " Staranzano ", " Castions " and " Ronchi ".

Group A

In group A should attend originally Israel, it took their team but back before the tournament starts. South Africa did not occur to her first match against Croatia, which was counted 7-0 for their opponents. After a total of ten games, teams from Italy, the Netherlands, Croatia and South Africa qualified for the final round.
