Somewhere in England is the eleventh album; or the seventh solo studio album by George Harrison after the breakup of the Beatles. It was on 5 June 1981 ( USA: June 1, 1981) published. In the U.S., the album came eleventh and Britain place thirteen; Germany ranked 36 in the charts.

Genesis

After the release of the last album George Harrison Harrison founded with his manager Denis O'Brien a film production company called Handmade Films still he completed his autobiography, I Me Mine and published this in 1980.

Between March 1980 and October 1980 George Harrison was working in his home studio FPSHOT ( Friars Park Studio, Henley-on -Thames ) on the pieces for his new album Somewhere in England, which he then presented with the following track list of his record company Warner Brothers:

The original release date was set for 29 October 1980 but then decided to Warner Bros. Records, to release the album until George Harrison renounce the title Flying Hour, Lay His Head, Sat Singing and Tears of the World and by four would replace new songs. Furthermore, the remaining six titles should be revised and remixed music. In addition, the cover should be redesigned. The original album was released in the coming years on bootlegs. The songs Flying Hour, Lay His Head, Sat Singing appeared remixed in February 1988 Songs by George Harrison and Tears of the World also remixed, released in June 1992 Songs by George Harrison Two. These two limited releases are each a four - track EP with picture books, of which all copies were signed by George Harrison. Lay His Head appeared in another new mix in October 1987 as the B- side of the single Got My Mind Set on You. Tears of the World was 1/3 released as a bonus track in March 2004 on the album Thirty Three & again.

After the rejection of the album, George Harrison went from November 1980 to February 1981 back into the recording studio to record four new songs. While he was busy with the shoot, John Lennon was murdered on December 8, 1980. Due to this fact, George Harrison took the song All Those Years Ago, which was originally intended for Ringo Starr, as a tribute to John Lennon scratch. But he changed the text and invited Paul and Linda McCartney and Denny Laine a, contribute backing vocals. As Ringo Starr already played drums on the original recordings 1980 in November, all three surviving Beatles were involved in a new song for this recording for the first time.

Blood from a Clone is a critical examination of the record industry. Teardrops is a love song, while the fourth title of the second recording session, That Which I Have Lost, a philosophical text has.

Two songs from the first recording sessions Baltimore Oriole and Hong Kong Blues are compositions by Hoagy Carmichael. The first piece was the first time in 1942, the latter published in 1939. Unconsciousness Rules is an ironic description of people who attend nightclubs. Life Itself is a religious and Writing 's on the Wall a philosophical song. Save the World satirical describes the condition of the earth, and appeals to the audience to save them. On June 4, 1985, a new eingesungene and remixed version appeared on a compilation album in favor of the environmental organization Greenpeace. The song ends with an extract of the song Crying from the album Wonderwall Music.

All Those Years Ago

The first single All Those Years Ago / Writing 's on the Wall was published in May 1981, reached number two in the U.S., UK and Germany number 13 number 44 on the charts.

Teardrops

The second single Teardrops / Save the World was released in July 1981, could be placed either in the USA, Great Britain nor Germany in the charts.

Reissues

First published in CD format was made in June 1991 without bonus tracks. In March 2004, the album was re-released in a newly remastered version on CD in the EMI Group with the bonus track Save the World ( Acoustic Demo Version ) and the initially planned, rejected by Warner Brothers in 1980, cover design. Since October 2007, Somewhere is also available as a digital download on iTunes, with the added bonus tracks Flying Hour in England.
