Sondrio
Sondrio (German sinner or Sonders ) is the capital of the eponymous Italian province ( Lombardy ) and with 21,536 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) the biggest town of the Valtellina.
The name is derived from the Latin name Sundrium.
Sondrio was elected to the Alpine town of the year 2007.
History
Due to its favorable strategic location near the transalpine roads pass the place was significant already in prehistoric times.
From 1512 to 1797 the Valtellina Sondrio and thus belonged to the Grisons.
Traffic
The bypass Sondrio is part of the State Road 38, which connects the Valtellina over the Stelvio with the South Tyrol Vinschgau. Also of importance is the Valtelina. In the neighboring village of Caiolo is an airfield for general aviation.
