Squillace

Squillace is a municipality with 3413 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Catanzaro in Calabria. In ancient times it was called Scylacium (Greek Σκυλάκιον ), also Scylaceum ( Σκυλακεῖον ) or Scylletium ( Σκυλλήτιον ).

The village lies four kilometers in a straight line from the Ionian coast and is divided into Squillace Superiore ( on the hill) and Squillace Lido ( on the coast ).

In Squillace Lido keep all summer over most of the tourists. Squillace is very popular with the Northern Italians. Foreign tourists are rarely seen.

The nearest airport, Lamezia Terme International Airport is about 50 km away. In Squillace Lido the single track railway line from Taranto to Reggio Calabria goes through, but does not stop. The station was closed in the 1990s. The nearest railway station to the north is Catanzaro Lido and south Soverato.

The most attractive sights in Squillace are il Castello Normanno ( the Norman castle ), il Duomo ( the cathedral ) and il Ponte del Diavolo ( the Devil's Bridge ).
