Svaliava

Svalyava (Ukrainian and Russian Свалява; Hungarian Szolyva, Slovak Svaľava, Czech Svalava or Svaljava, German Schwalbe [l ] brook, Yiddish Swaljawy, Swaliwe, Swaljawe, Swaljiwe, Romanian Svalova ) is a town with 17,000 inhabitants in the Western Ukraine Oblast Transcarpathia (Ukrainian Закарпатська область ). The main town of the Rajons Svalyava lies in the valley of the river Latoryzja at the confluence with the river Swaljawka ( Свалявка ) and to her also the village Dratschyno heard (Ukrainian Драчино, Hungarian Újtövisfalva ). In the urban area is located between the mouth of Swaljawka and the road bridge in the Latorica Martha Margarita Island (Ukrainian острів Марта - Маргарита ).

Traffic

Through the valley leads the main road connection from Transcarpathia over the Carpathians to Lviv. Svalyava is located on the railway line from Mukachevo by Stry / Lemberg, it was opened in 1887.

History

The town was first mentioned in writing in 1263 as Zoloa and was extended and expanded by the Kingdom of Hungary fetched by the Hungarian King German settlers as Schwalbach. The place is situated in the Carpathian Ukraine and shares the story of this historic region, until 1918 belonged to Svalyava Bereg county. After the end of the Second World War, the Soviet Union set up in a place a labor camp ( " malenkij robot" ) for ethnic Hungarians and German from the Carpathian Ukraine and Galicia.
