Svirsk

Swirsk (Russian Свирск ) is a city in Irkutsk Oblast (Russia) with 13,650 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the plain north of Sayan, about 150 km north-west of Irkutsk Oblasthauptstadt on the left bank of the Angara.

The city Swirsk forms a separate urban district.

Swirsk is located (only freight) connected by a branch line to the town and station, 20 km away Cheremkhovo on the Trans -Siberian Railway.

Climate

The climate is highly continental. The mean July temperature is 24 ° C ( 35.4 ° C absolute maximum ), the mean January temperature -19.4 ° C ( -43.8 ° C absolute minimum ), the mean annual rainfall 377 mm.

History

Since the first half of the 18th century there were at site of the present city, the settlement Swirskaja.

In the 1930s, here accumulators plant and a river port on the Angara built to wood and coal handling for the nearby mining area around Cheremkhovo and the place was given the status of an urban-type settlement.

During World War II a further accumulators work from Leningrad was relocated to Swirsk. The town continued to grow and eventually received on November 16, 1949 municipal law under the present name.
