Michael Phelps is the first male swimmer in Olympic history who succeeds in a triple victory in a row in a discipline. Phelps, Lochte and Cseh were already in Beijing in 2008 in this discipline on the podium, but in a different order. At that time, Phelps won ahead of Cseh and Lochte. It was the first time in Olympic swimming competitions that all three medal winners came back to the podium. For the first time all the finalists came at a time under two minutes to target.
