Systematic Chaos

Occupation

Systematic Chaos (german for: " Systematic Chaos " ) is the ninth studio album by American progressive metal band Dream Theater. It was released on June 1, 2007 in Europe and on June 5, 2007 in America. Systematic Chaos is the first album of the group, which was released on the label Roadrunner Records.

Background

Systematic Chaos was written from September 2006 to January 2007 in the Avatar Studios in New York City and recorded. It was produced by guitarist John Petrucci, among others, and drummer Mike Portnoy and mixed by Paul Northfield. On 14 February 2007, the album was completed. That same month, the track list was made public. The album appeared in two versions, a standard version with a CD and a special edition with a CD of the album can be heard, and a DVD featuring a 90-minute Making Of is seen with interviews, as well as the complete album in 5.1 surround sound. The special edition has a different CD cover than the regular version.

Music style

The album is, beside Awake and Train of Thought, one of the hardest albums of the band. However, Dream Theater is not oriented this time, as at Train of Thought, in the heavy metal direction, but more in the melodic direction, with many progressive elements. Mike Portnoy himself called Systematic Chaos as a tough and technical album. He also called it " dramatic and aggressive."

Songs

The official website of Dream Theater announced in early 2007 that the band is looking 50 fans from the New York City area. You should on the album in the songs " Prophets of War" and "In the Presence of Enemies Pt. Be heard 2 ". In January 2007, many fans came and sang some shouts, so that they could be used in the background of these two songs. Among other things, Mikael Åkerfeldt, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Steven Wilson, Chris Jericho, Daniel Gildenlöw and Neal Morse can be heard as a speaker on the song " Repentance ".

The fifth song on the album, " Repentance " is the fourth song in Mike Portnoy's " Alcoholics Anonymous - cycle ," in which Portnoy describes his experiences with alcoholism and Alcoholics Anonymous. Even the three songs " The Glass Prison" by Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, "This Dying Soul " by Train of Thought and " The Root of All Evil " from Octavarium grappled with the issue. The song represents the steps eight and nine of the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Was completed the AA cycle with "The Shattered Fortress" by the successor album Black Clouds & Silver Linings.

"Constant Motion" is the first single of the album. She appeared on April 27, 2007. Moreover, it was turned to " Constant Motion " a music video, the first video of the band since 1997. The first single was "Constant Motion" long before the release of the album and the single on the Internet on the official website by Roadrunner Records, and on the MySpace page of Dream Theater to listen.

At the request of Mike Portnoy, who is also one of the producers of the album, the song was " In the Presence of Enemies " divided into two parts. Part 1 is the first song of the album and takes exactly 9 minutes Part 2 is the last song of the album and takes about 16 minutes. A similar concept has turned the British rock band Pink Floyd ( which is considered one of the greatest influences of the band ) with the song " Shine on You Crazy Diamond" in which appeared in 1975 on their album Wish You Were Here. Despite the division is " In the Presence of Enemies ", a composition is played live and in one piece. This makes " In the Presence of Enemies " 25 minutes and 38 seconds to the second longest song the band for " Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence ", which is for 42 minutes. However, it is played live sometimes only a part.
