Falling into Infinity

Occupation

Falling Into Infinity is the fourth regular studio album by American progressive metal band Dream Theater. There in 1997 by the major label East West ( Warner ) was published.

Formation and style

In advance of the production was exercised by the management of the band and the record company put considerable pressure on the five musicians. The pronounced playful, complex and progressive style of previous albums brought only partially a commercial success. So we sat Dream Theater successful and well-known by its written for Bon Jovi hit songwriter Desmond Child on board. With it, Dream Theater should make an album which, although still meets the highest technical demands music, but also serves the commercial component, and Dream Theater should be to help give them more airplay on radio / TV and more units sold.

However, this clashed strongly with the sophisticated musical direction of the musicians, so the band as Mike Portnoy years later divulged, would be almost broken in this conflict. The band survived the crisis. The album title should first Stream of Consciousness loud, but this was rejected by the other band members, as this would be too pompous. The then selected title comes from Petrucci.

The album has been notably less complex musical structures, more accessible for pop-rock more similar basic features. The hoped-for commercial success was missing, especially as regards the first and only single, " Hollow Years". Even today the album at live shows is relatively rarely considered in the selection of songs.

Reception

Jeremy Ulrey of Allmusic wrote, only Hell's Kitchen and the central part of New Millennium showed that the band have not forgotten their roots, otherwise it is AOR Operating the clichés. He missed three out of five stars.
