Table tennis at the 2008 Summer Paralympics

In the Summer Paralympics in Beijing in 2008 medals were awarded in a total of 24 competitions in table tennis. The decisions were made between the 7th and the 16th September 2008. The venue was the sports hall at Peking University, where the Olympic competitions were held.

Classes

It was divided into ten classes of table tennis. The classes TT 1 to TT 5 started in a wheelchair, the classes TT TT 6 to 10 Standing:

  • TT 1: Significant muscle stiffness all over the body, speed and accuracy of arm movement and sitting balance reduced.
  • TT 2: As in TT 1, but with almost normal beater and little force.
  • TT 3: With minor limitations in the control of both arms and considerable tension in both legs.
  • TT 4: Normal arm and trunk movements and restricted accuracy of arm movements, as well as double -femoral amputees with short stumps.
  • TT 5: With good core stability to the front, low restriction on the legs and slight loss of accuracy of arm movements.
  • TT 6: combination of disabilities in the playing arm and legs, as well as involuntary movements throughout the body.
  • TT 7: Unilateral or bilateral upper or lower arm amputation or a combination of both and moderate involuntary movements.
  • TT 8: With strong disability in one or both legs, unilateral or bilateral thigh amputation below-knee amputation. Loss of accuracy and stiffness in the arms and legs.
  • TT 9: Minimal disability in one or both arms or different lengths of the legs, good dynamic balance. Slight limitation of accuracy at a side of the body.
  • TT 10: With normal function of the hitting arm at low restriction in the free arm. Amputation up to one third of the forearm with minimal involuntary movements.

In individual and team competition different classes were grouped with women and men. There were eight competitions in singles at the women and the men. In the team competition, three medals in the women and five medals were awarded in the men's. In total, 24 medals were awarded. The classes have been summarized as follows:

Game Mode

Individual competition

The individual competitions initially started with a group phase in which everyone plays against everyone. Then each group, the winners came on and played in the knockout system against each other. There were three winning sets played per match.

Team competition

In the team competition was played as a knockout system. The teams started depending on the number of participating nations in the eighth - or quarter-finals.

To win a match, a team had to finish victorious three games. A meeting consisted of at least two singles and a double. If after these three games, no decision have fallen, one or two additional single were played until one team had three games won. There were three winning sets played per game.

Qualified athletes

For Germany, two women and ten men started at the Beijing Games.

Women:

Both women played in a team in the team competition of the class 4 TT - TT 5

Men:

In the team competition, Holger Nikelis, Otto Vilsmaier and Walter Kilger started in the class TT 1 - TT 2, Dietmar Kober, Jan Gürtler and Selcuk Cetin in the team class TT 4 - TT 5 Jochen Wollmert, Daniel Arnold and Rainer Schmidt played in a team in class 6 TT - TT 8 the order of the players listed here corresponds to the official message for the competitions.

Results

The players from China were superior in these Summer Paralympics. They took over half of the gold medals (13 of 24). France occupied by 4 gold medals to second place in the medals table followed by South Korea (3rd place), Germany and Slovakia (both 4th place), each with a gold medal.
