The Univé Stadium (formerly Stadium Meerdijk ) is a football stadium in the Dutch municipality of Emmen in Drenthe. It is the home of the football club FC Emmen.

History

The stadium was built in an industrial area on the outskirts of the city of Emmen and on 27 August 1977 with the Game FC Emmen Emmen VV against Germanicus ( 3-1 ) opened before 6500 spectators. At that time it was still Meerdijk Stadium and had 12,000 seats. Its present name has it by the Dutch insurance company Univé. At a relegation match to the first League against SC Heerenveen 1990 12.000 spectators came into the stadium. In the years 1994, 1996, 1997 and 2001, the sports facility was renovated. Today, the four covered grandstands for the spectators seats 8600.

The last modernization in 2001 was carried out for the Junior World Cup in 2005. For the tournament, the system was adapted to the conditions imposed by the world governing body FIFA and completely renovated. So also the fences were removed on the stands and installed a new floodlights with 120 headlights and an illuminance of 1400 lux. In Emmen eight World Cup matches took place.

On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the company Univé found on 7 and 8 September 2007, two concerts in Univé Stadium. At the two concerts with, inter alia, Frans Bauer and Marco Borsato were 17,000 spectators in the stadium. On 7 May 2008, a football match of the women was held in Emmen. The team of the Netherlands and China clashed and parted 1-1 tie.
