Vila Viçosa is a small town ( Vila ) and a circle ( concelho ) in Portugal with 8293 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011). The place is famous for its palace and for his significant marble deposits.

History

The surroundings of Vila Viçosa was settled by the Celts and later the Romans. The region was part of the Visigoth kingdom and was later conquered by the Moors. In 1217 it came to the reconquest ( Reconquista ) and King Alfonso III. Vila Viçosa gave the city rights in 1270. In the early 14th century, King Dionysius I had a castle build.

1461 the region came under the rule of the royal family of Bragança. 1507 Palace of Bragança family was completed. When Earl João Bragança in 1640 proclaimed King John IV of Portugal, the family moved to Lisbon to Bragança and took advantage of the huge palace in Vila Viçosa only as a summer residence. This Vila Viçosa lost in view of the great policy importance.

Vila Viçosa is the administrative seat of the homonymous district. The neighboring districts are (clockwise starting from the north ): Elvas, Alandroal, Redondo and Borba.
