History

The Order of Avis erected here in 1298 a castle, at the behest of King D.Dinis. The, in the wake village was named Alandroal, probably going back to a local Oleandergarten ( Portuguese: Alandroal ) of the friars of Avis. The town received its town charter ( Foral ) in 1486 by King D.João II King D.Manuel I. renewed the city rights in 1514 as part of its administrative reforms.

The town suffered some damage during the earthquake of Lisbon 1755. Subsequently, a series buildings are new, including the town hall.

Culture and sights
