Waldemar Baszanowski

Waldemar Baszanowski ( born August 15, 1935 in Graudenz, † April 29, 2011 in Warsaw) was a Polish weightlifter.

Career

Waldemar Baszanowski began in 1956, when he became a soldier, with the weight lifting at AWF Warsaw. Within three years he showed benefits that made ​​him ripe for international championships. In addition to weight lifting Waldemar also paid attention to his professional training, so he studied from 1957 to 1961 at the Academy of Physical Education in Warsaw and has a degree in Physical Education.

His first international competition took place at the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960, where he finished 5th in the lightweight. From that point on it went uphill. He was in his long career, twice Olympic champion, three-time world champions and European champions six times.

Waldemar Baszanowski was a very elegant, slim -acting weightlifter whose strength was rapid strength. He weighed about 70 kg, so that he could easily work off the few kilos to start at lightweight ( to 67.5 kg of body weight) can. After the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, where it was not granted to him, yet to win a medal, he finished his active career. He had set 24 world records and 61 Polish records. He worked in the following years as a sports scientist and coach and in 1989 became President of the European Weightlifting Federation.
