The Washington Dulles International Airport ( IATA: IAD, ICAO: KIAD, simply Dulles International Airport ) is the busiest airport in the metropolitan region of Washington and one of the largest international airports in the United States. The airport is located about 26 miles ( 41 km) west of Washington, DC, Virginia (time zone GMT -5) and was named after former Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. The design of the main terminal and the tower was by Finnish architect Eero Saarinen. The airport serves as a hub for United Airlines.

History

The airport area is about 44.5 square kilometers and extends over the limit of Fairfax County and Loudoun County. The airport is located between two unincorporated areas, Chantilly and Dulles, west of Herndon and southwest of Sterling. In 1958, the former unincorporated territory Willard was dissolved to create space for Dulles. In addition, numerous streets, houses, shops and schools were demolished to make way for the runways.

The airport was opened on 17 November 1962 by U.S. President John F. Kennedy and Dulles International Airport and supplemented by the City to Washington Dulles International Airport in 1984. The airport was used in the film Die Hard 2 as a motive.

Terminals

The airport has one main terminal and two " Midfield Terminal. " There are 123 gates in the whole airport. The airport used mobile lounges to connect the terminals. Since 2010 there is a " Aero Train" between the main terminal, midfield terminal A, Midfield Terminal B, and Midfield Terminal C. To visit midfield terminal D you have to drive with a mobile lounge.

Main terminal

In the main terminal all central functions are summarized: ticket office, baggage claim, customs and border clearance. There are four gates, the "Z- Gates" for U.S. Airways is called.

Midfield terminal

The mid-field terminals A and B share a building. Terminal A has 47 gates, mostly for small planes. Aeroflot, Aeromexico, Air France, Avianca, Copa Airlines, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Icelandair, KLM, Porter Airlines, Qatar Airways, Saudi and United Airlines. Terminal B has 28 gates and is All Nippon Airways, American Airlines, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Cayman Airways, Delta Air Lines, Ethiopian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, South African Airways, Southwest Airlines, Sun Air International, TACA Airlines, Turkish Airlines and Virgin America. Terminal C and D have 44 boarding gates and only serve United Airlines. In Terminal C there is a customs and border clearance for United Airlines and Star Alliance members.
