Weißkirchen an der Traun

White an der Traun is a municipality in Upper Austria in the district of Wels-Land in Hausruckviertel with 3207 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). The competent jurisdiction is catfish.

Geography

White an der Traun is located at 305 m altitude in Hausruckviertel. The expansion is 6.2 kilometers from north to south, from west to east 7.1 km. The total area is 21.8 km ².

19.3 % of the area is forested, 68.3 % of the area is used for agriculture.

History

From earlier centuries, little is known of the history of white Kirchen. A stone ax found, suggesting that already lived in the Stone Age people in the room white churches. Excavated ruins show, have passed that in Roman times in white an der Traun settlements. After the end of Roman rule, however, the area was deserted again largely. Only when the pin Kremsmuenster was founded in 777 by Duke Tassilo, the monks of the monastery in today's white churches fields and meadows began to create.

In the year 1179 is Wæizchirchen in the Lateran document by Pope Alexander III. mentioned for the first time Kremsmünster. The name refers to the fact that in white churches in the 12th century a brick, whitewashed church - in contrast to the then still popular wood construction - stood. The present parish church was built in 1484.

The burned in 1609 the vicarage was rebuilt and enlarged subsequently embellished and significant. The Weißkirchner parsonage is not only worth mentioning because of its beauty, but also because of significant historical events. On 1 May 1809, later Field Marshal Radetzky was by white churches and stayed in the rectory, where a marble plaque at this event is commemorated. The next day, Emperor Napoleon moved with his troops by white churches and one handed him a glass of water in the rectory. The glass from which Napoleon drank is still kept in the rectory.

The massive bell tower originally had four side towers, but received in 1807 a dome. In 1857 a major fire in today's Gasthaus Binder broke out and destroyed nine Häuser.1899 the church was converted into the present Gothic style.

The founding date of the band goes back to 1875, that the volunteer fire department in 1889. In 1901, white churches received a police station, which was closed on 31 December 1962.

After the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in 1938, the village belonged to the Upper Danube. Around 100 concentration camp prisoners died in death marches by white churches in the last days of the war. A memorial in the Bergerner Au near the Weigl - good recalls. After 1945 the restoration of the state of Upper Austria.

Demographics

The municipality colors are red, white and green.

The white cross with the stylized "W" symbolizes the place name. The four discs are available for the four cadastral Graßing, Sinnersdorf, white churches and Weyerbach.
