Welsh Cup

The Welsh Cup (Welsh Cwpan Cymreig ) is a cup competition, which is played annually between football clubs from the Welsh league system. It was made in 1877 /78 playing for the first time, making it one of the oldest football competitions in the world.

History

Initiated by the Football Association of Wales contest was designed similar to the English FA Cup in 1876 and has since seen throughout with the exception of the two world wars instead. In the early days also partially English teams from the border region competed.

Names originally all Welsh teams and some English teams near the Welsh border in part, it is in accordance with the provisions of the UEFA since the mid-1990s, only those who also play in the Welsh league system. This separation has been repeatedly confirmed by the recent invitation of Wrexham FC and AFC Newport County in 2012 of UEFA. For this reason, the FAW Premier Cup was founded in 1997, were allowed to play the Welsh teams in the English league system. This competition, however, was discontinued in 2008 again.

In 2013 Prestatyn Town won the 126 competing for the Welsh Cup and is the current title holder.

Mode

Similar to the English counterpart of the competition is designed as a round competition. There are no seeded teams and in determining the pairings by lottery also home advantage is determined.

When a game ends in a draw, there will be a replay (WS) on the court of the opposing team. Also ends this draw, there will be an extension and possibly the penalty shoot-out.

The Cup winners qualify for the UEFA Europa League.
