William T. Cobb

William Titcomb Cobb ( born July 23, 1857 in Rockland, Maine, † July 24, 1937 ) was an American politician and from 1905 to 1909 governor of Maine.

Early years

After primary school, Cobb studied at Bowdoin College and at the German universities of Berlin and Leipzig. Finally, he was still studying at Harvard University law. After he was admitted to the bar in 1880, he began a successful legal career.

Political career

William Cobb was a member of the Republican Party. Prior to his nomination for the top candidate of his party for the gubernatorial election of Maine in 1904, he was politically hardly have appeared. After he won the actual election for governor, he could take up his post on January 4, 1905. After a successful re-election in 1906, he could remain in office until January 6, 1909. During his tenure, sharper Prohibition laws were passed, promote economic growth, accelerate the development of railway and set food safety laws for the protection of consumers in force.

After the end of his tenure, Cobb retired from politics and devoted himself to his private affairs. He died in July 1937. William Cobb was married to Lucy Banks, with whom he had two children.
