Willis Sweet

Willis Sweet ( born January 1, 1856 in Alburgh, Vermont, † July 9, 1925 in San Juan, Puerto Rico ) was an American politician. Between 1890 and 1895 he represented the first electoral district of the state of Idaho in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years

Willis Sweet attended the common schools and then the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. In this city he made an apprenticeship as a printer. In September 1881 he moved to Moscow in Idaho Territory. After studying law, he began in 1889 in this city to work as a lawyer.

Political career

Sweet was a member of the Republican Party. In 1888 he was appointed United States Attorney for the Idaho Territory. Between 1889 and 1890 he was a judge in the first legal district of the area. Sweet was also 1889-1893, the first president of the University of Idaho. After Idaho State was joined as the United States, Willis Sweet was elected as the first member of the new state in the U.S. House of Representatives. After some re- election he was able to exercise this mandate between October 1, 1890, March 3, 1895. In 1894 he abandoned a bid again. Two years later, Sweet ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate.

In the following years, Willis Sweet worked as a lawyer in Coeur d' Alene. From 1903 to 1905 he was Attorney General of Puerto Rico. There he was in the capital, San Juan since 1913 until his death in 1925 to publish a newspaper.
