Yisrael Yeshayahu

Yisrael Yeshayahu Sharabi - ( born April 20, 1908 in Sa'da, today Yemen, † June 20, 1979 in Jerusalem) was an Israeli politician who was temporarily Postmaster for several years President of the Knesset.

Life

Yeshayahu initially received a religious education and earned his further knowledge in economics, literature and sociology by attending courses. In the Kingdom of Yemen, he was an active member of the antilurianischen Dor Daim - movement.

After his immigration to the British Mandate of Palestine in 1929, he managed joined the Histadrut, the umbrella organization of the Israeli trade unions, and was there in 1934-1948 head of the Department of Yemeni immigrants and Jews from the East.

After the establishment of Israel Yeshayahu, who was also a member of the Workers' Council of Tel Aviv was, in the years 1948 to 1952 active organizer of the immigration of Jews from Yemen, primarily responsible for the operation Magic Carpet. Besides his work as deputy secretary of government and representatives for the communication between the government and the Knesset in 1948 to 1949, he was also a delegate to the Zionist Congress and a member of the Asefat HaNivharim.

On 12 February 1951, he was first a member of the Knesset and was one of more than a quarter of a century until June 13, 1977 as a representative of Mapai and later the Avodah. During his long parliamentary affiliation he was a member of several committees.

After he was Deputy Speaker of the Knesset since August 1955, he was on January 2, 1967 Post a minister in the government of Prime Minister Levi Eshkol and holding office in the subsequent government of Prime Minister Golda Meir to 15 December 1969.
